Responsibilities
Grant Funded position through September 2022, with possibility of extension.
Position Summary
Under direct supervision and with some latitude for independent judgement, creates data visualizations, conducts extensive data architecture planning and creation, conducts detailed state-of-the-art analyses of healthcare claims and utilization of long-term care services using advanced scientific computing methodologies as well as existing and purposefully written software.
Specific Responsibilities
A. Acquire and builds new data infrastructure 30%
- Uses Visual Basic to extract data from spreadsheets
- Develops SQL SSIS packages to upload data to SQL from various platforms
- Writes code to conduct Extract-Translate-Load (ETL) from warehoused data to appropriate analytical platform
- Writes SAS, SQL, Python code to integrate data in the analytical platform.
- Writes SAS and SQL retrievals from the Residential History File
- Creates data extracts for sharing and applies quality control
- Migrates and merges data from existing databases to newly defined data ecosystem.
- Reviews project design decisions and business rules with team members before implementing.
- Designs validation tests of the data.
- Develops relational database architecture for future operations, and converted SAS software flat files in a manner to optimize data organization and constructs large datasets.
- Performs quality assessment on inputs and outputs data, including display of individual items.
B. Data analysis 20%
- Social network analysis: Use R, Python and other software to produce patient sharing social networks and social network measures and comparisons across networks.
- Apply machine learning models and statistical techniques to analytical data.- Work on every aspect of the problem: data munging, feature engineering, mathematical modeling and evaluation.
C. Data visualization and reporting 40%
- Works with senior team members to present techniques and findings to team members.
- Designing and managing visualization of dashboards for decision making and official reporting
- Utilized SAS, SQL, R, Tableau and other methods to develop and automate recurring reports.
D. Professional support and development 10%
- May confer under supervision with user departments by providing assistance in data preparation and management, program design and testing; package selection and use of systems, software and equipment.
- Provides consultation support on installed system support and related programs; may instruct large user groups on such systems.
- Keeps abreast of trends as they relate to the computer field by self-study, attending job related seminars, courses of conferences which enhance personal development and strengthens the user service function.
- Performs other related duties, including presentation of seminars, courses and instruction on computer services as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Engineering, and 2-3 years of related experience; Master’s degree in Data Science or computer science preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficient in programming, statistical analyses, database and visualization software; specifically: SAS, R, Python, SQL, Power BI.
- Experience with statistics, data analysis, data mining and visualization methods.
- Critical thinking skills and ability to research the scientific literature.
- Must have at least 1 year of experience with Medicare claims. Familiarity with the US healthcare system and Department of Veterans Affairs is a plus.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with both scientific and technical personnel.
- Experience in simplifying complex information and explaining findings, outcomes and presenting insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 50,000 - $ 80,000 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
