Position: PROWD Peer Mentor (2) Positions

Hours: 8 hrs. / 46wk

Salary Range: $4,278 – $7,130

Salary Grade: 13      

 

Summary of Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the PROWD Program Manager, the PROWD Peer Mentor assists with the needs of Action for a Better Community’s Youth Services Department (ABC). This role will specifically assist with the PROWD extended day program. This position offers valuable experience supporting youth in Monroe County. The ideal candidate is interested in helping others, willing to learn, and ready to take on responsibilities in a mentoring capacity.

 The PROWD Peer Mentor will be responsible for assisting with a variety of classroom activities. This role will assist with program set-up/tear-down and provide mentorship to youth ages 10-13 through different efforts. In addition, the peer mentor will also be responsible for assisting with administrative tasks to support the program and department. This includes writing and creating content for the program, as well as organizing and maintaining files.

Availability:

Mentors must be available to work at least 8-10 hours per week, after school Monday-Friday and occasional weekends depending on events and availability.

 Qualifications and Education and Experience:

Education: Must currently be enrolled in college/trade school or a recent high school graduate. Must maintain passing grades in all classes and provide academic report cards for records.

  • Experience and Qualifications: Must have an interest in working with youth. Pursuing a degree in education, business, or communications is a plus. Prior experience working with young adults/adults, in an educational/teaching/counseling, non- profit, or community-based setting, is a plus
  • Age: Must be between the ages 18- 24 years old
  • Leadership skills: Ability to lead by example and serve as a positive role model for peers.
  • Communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt to both students and adults
  • Empathy and Patience: A genuine interest in supporting others, especially in a peer-to-peer mentoring capacity.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to assist peers with challenges or questions, offering solutions or directing them to appropriate resources.  
  • Technical Skills: Comfortable using basic office software (Word, Excel, Google Docs) and willing to learn new software.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with staff and fellow Peer Mentors. Flexibility and a willingness to assist wherever needed.
  • Dependability: Reliable and punctual with a positive attitude.
  • Reliable Transportation: Ability to travel to different school sites throughout the year.

Certain employees of ABC must receive, and maintain, full background clearance prior to hire and periodically after hire. Any prospective or current employee who has an indication of a violation or is in unsatisfactory standing, will not be hired or retained  

Other Tasks:

Provide general administrative support as needed. Carries out other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

The position is in person and requires the physical health and capability to work in both a school environment as well as various Agency sites and/or community locations. The employee may be required to be seated for half of their work schedule (Content creation, meetings, group activities). The employee will be required to stand for an extended period. Walking, or climbing stairs will be required (i.e. class activities, room observations, training, presentations, forums, community education and outreach efforts); and the employee may occasionally have to stoop, crouch or bend (i.e. student activities, filing, etc.).

 The employee will be required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds (i.e., supplies/program materials/mailings, etc.). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to take and give verbal & written directives/instructions; and must be able to hear and respond satisfactorily. Some evening and weekend hours may be required at times in a variety of locations in the community.
