Job Summary

The Advancement Solutions Team makes transformation possible for the RIT community by effectively partnering with and empowering advancement stakeholders at the crossroads of strategy, systems, data, and analytics. As an essential member of this team, the engineer will lead and manage the development, delivery, and support of all reporting and incoming data requests.

The engineer must be able to effectively apply interpersonal, programming, and data skills to meet the needs of our diverse stakeholders. Requests frequently involve querying data sources and constructing reports and analyses. The ability to understand their perspectives, evolve our reporting infrastructure, and deliver impactful self-service capabilities that empower our end users are hallmarks of a successful candidate.

This is a front-office information systems role. The engineer will support our ecosystem roadmap, which includes increased usage of Microsoft Azure, Python, and Salesforce CRM. This will be accomplished by providing data delivery solutions and building supporting processes and infrastructure, in collaboration with our data and systems staff members. The incumbent will have opportunities to provide input into their associated professional growth and development plan.

The engineer will be responsible for understanding trends in reporting, data delivery to end users, and the Advancement industry as they apply to RIT’s strategic roadmap.

Data and reporting quality

  • Ensure quality and accuracy of results through interaction with end users for feedback. Strive for continuous improvement and improved client satisfaction.
  • Gather data from databases and other systems using SQL, Python and other tools. Manage and transform data to prepare it for reporting and analytics.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify leverage points and to promote standardization, scale, self-service solutions, efficiency and automation.
  • Create and ensure accurate documentation of reporting processes and procedures.

Technology stack and operation

  • Assume operational responsibility for the reporting ecosystem for standardized reports and excel based reports, including recommending upgrades, new tools and process changes to the ecosystem utilizing excel, PL/SQL, Python, PowerBI and other tools.
  • Improve the performance of existing reports by optimizing queries, code or automations, as necessary, troubleshoot report issues and establishing best practices for reporting.
  • Own and maintain our report and dashboard website/catalog. Produce appropriate analytics on report usage.
  • Stay up to date on the latest tools and techniques related to job responsibilities

Stakeholder support

  • Build relationships with UA managers and program teams to understand their key challenges and needs.
  • Gather information to author technical requirements and design specifications as needed.
  • Create, review, and approve material for training end users in matters related to reports, their usage and interpretation, and skills to promote greater self-reliance as necessary. Provide training as needed.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in management information systems, data analytics, business administration, computer science, research, or other related field OR equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a reporting and data-centric role involving creation and ownership of full reporting life cycle, ideally in a fundraising environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years in front-office or MIS role using relational DBMS (ideally Oracle) and Microsoft tools.
Skills
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the technology suite used by the Division of University Advancement as well as the internal workings of the University: MS Office, MS Azure, Python, PowerBI, Oracle, PL/SQL, enterprise automation tools.
  • Programming using SQL to create structured reports and data extracts. Intermediate level understanding of SQL relating to tables, views, functions, stored procedures, etc.
  • Programming using Python to prepare data for analyses and report consumption.
  • Programming using Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create effective and automated reports. Some training will be provided, but incumbent needs to learn it quickly.
  • Advanced level understanding of data tables, pivots, and worksheet functions in Excel.
  • Creation of visualizations and using Excel, PowerBI, Tableau, Python Notebooks, or similar tools.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills characterized by the ability to listen, speak, and write effectively with all levels of the organization and to effectively explain complex concepts and solutions to lay persons in clear, concise, easy-to-understand terms.
  • Experience in defining and providing user training and/or teaching; video instruction is a plus.
  • Maintain a high level of security and ethical standards when dealing with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree and/or track record of relevant CE credits preferred.
