Job Summary

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) is responsible for managing a broad range of human resources functions for an assigned group of colleges and divisions across the university. The HRBP will serve as a trusted partner to their assigned group(s) in providing administrators, managers, supervisors, and staff consultative HR services and support that reflects and advances the goals and objectives of the university. Similarly, the HRBP will partner with the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs in providing consultative HR service to faculty.

Job Responsibilities

  • Meets on a regular basis with assigned colleges and divisions, building and developing trusted relationships with the leadership and staff.
  • Provides guidance and counsel to assigned colleges and divisions regarding employee relations issues and employment actions. Works closely with managers and employees to address and resolve employee relations issues. Recommends corrective action when appropriate and assists in the delivery of the corrective action as necessary.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of the legal requirements and RIT policies related to the day-to-day management of employees. Provides related direction to assigned colleges and divisions with interpretation of, and compliance with, federal and state discrimination and employment laws and regulations, including university policies and HR policies, procedures, and practices. Partners with legal counsel as needed/required.
  • Provides strategic HR support in the development and implementation of the assigned department(s) strategic initiatives, including workforce planning, business unit restructuring, job description reviews, etc.
  • Responsible for recommending and issuing determinations in policy related matters, including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, conflict of interest, Title IX, etc. Receives complaints and partners with appropriate departments (Office of Compliance and Ethics, Institutional Audit, Public Safety) to conduct effective, thorough, and objective investigations of employee complaints, including but not limited to grievances, claims of harassment or discrimination, incidents of misconduct or fraud, ex-employee complaints, etc. Recommend related outcomes and appropriate discipline/sanctions.
  • Design, develop, deliver and/or facilitate training programs and organizational development initiatives. Partners with Talent Development or the college/division being supported.
  • Maintains relationships and collaborates with HR colleagues in the areas of Operations, Compensation, Benefits, Talent Acquisition and Talent Development.
  • Review and approve transactional items with an understanding of department and college structure and through the lens of university policy and practice (e.g. offer letter review; job requisition approval; supplemental compensation requests; position changes; etc.)
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 5 + years of professional HR experience
  • Minimum 5 + years of experience working with multiple human resource disciplines, including employee relations, compensation practices, performance management, staffing, compliance, employee development, etc.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver exceptional service.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to analyze complex issues and exercise sound judgment; initiative to address problems and develop solutions; superior attention to detail.
  • Strong business acumen, including the ability to understand the diverse needs of faculty, staff and managers and the ability to adjust services accordingly.
  • Experience with conflict resolution, including experience coaching, guiding, and conducting employee relations investigations including making determinations related to discrimination, harassment, and other employee complaints.
  • Technical and theoretical knowledge of multiple HR disciplines, including benefits, compensation, employment, performance management, and professional development.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of applicable state and federal employment and labor laws, governmental compliance requirements, and employment related policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including experience designing and delivery presentations and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on project teams to facilitate process improvements.
  • Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality and high standards of ethics and fairness in the execution of HR duties; ability to conduct business in a manner consistent with university and HR core values.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated success working in a decentralized environment.
  • Proficiency/fluency American Sign Language (ASL).
  • PHR/SPHR.
  • Experience with change management, business process review, and new system implementation (ERP).
  • Familiarity with Title IX.
