The office of Campus Safety responds to all criminal or emergency calls on the Batavia campus. All officers must be licensed by the State of New York under the Security Act, attend on the job training, first aid, CPR and AED training, and receive continuous training each year to update their skills. Campus safety is responsible of enforcement of all federal, state, county laws as well as all college regulations and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

This position, designated as a Peace Officer under Criminal Procedures Law §2.10 and New York State Education Law 6310 §5a, serves as second in command of Campus Safety, under the Director of Campus Safety. This position provides supervision of Campus Security and Peace officers. Under the supervision of the Director of Campus Safety, determines training needs, designs and provides training to Campus Safety staff and others as required ensuring compliance with the health and safety laws. Coordinates initial response to emergencies for assigned shift.   

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist the Director in the supervision and scheduling Campus Security Officers for adequate 24/7 coverage.  Assist the Director in the coordination and scheduling of appropriate patrols of college property for the protection of persons, property and equipment. 

Maintains records associated with Campus Safety operations, including incident reports, duty logs, fire log, parking violations, and parking permit databases, and the Campus Safety website.

Assists with the preparation of monthly and annual reports related specifically to Campus Safety as, including preparation of the annual Clery Crime report for the campus.

Propose policies and implement programs to address issues such as emergency response, fire prevention, sexual assault prevention and other related issues.

Directly supervise and support the activities of full time and part time Campus Security and Peace Officers on assigned shift including making suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, or other changes of status with these employees.

Assists the Director in development, implementation, and enforcement of standard department operating procedures. 

Assists the Director with the hiring of Campus Safety staff.

Patrols the grounds to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, provide first aid, and to prevent trespassing, theft, or damage.

Investigates complaints made to themself personally or assigned by the Director.

Assist GCC in Title IX investigations as directed.

Develop positive relationships with students and assist with the operations of the Student Safety Patrol.

Develop and maintain productive working relationships with other campus departments.

Seek opportunities for participating in approved professional development activities.

Keeps informed of changes in local, State, and Federal environmental laws, and conveys new requirements to the college community.

Identifies unsafe occupational practices and conditions through active inspection and reports thereof to the appropriate authorities.

Other duties as assigned.

 


Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Associates degree in Criminal Justice, law enforcement or related area is required.  Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, law enforcement or related area preferred.   

Experience

A minimum of two years' full-time experience in security/public safety, environmental safety, firefighter, police officer, or related position is required.  Supervisory experience is desirable. Training experience within public safety is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Candidate must have successfully completed requisite training as prescribed by the municipal police training council in accordance with Criminal Procedures Law §2.30.  They must legally be able to possess a firearm in the State of New York and maintain a valid New York State driver's license.   Knowledge of practices and procedures required to ensure safety of people and maintenance of order and security of buildings and grounds.  Familiarity with ICS/ NIMS, ICS level 300 desired.  Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication is required.  Must be able to work effectively with a diverse population.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full-time, year-round position at 35 hours per week. Position is compensated at a rate of $59,556.04 annually.  This position will be required to work during the evening hours and occasionally during the weekends  Salary, benefits, and conditions of employment are as set by the GEA contract.
