English Teacher – Long-Term Substitute

 

Job Summary

  • McQuaid Jesuit, a Catholic school in Rochester, NY, teaching boys in grades 6-12, is seeking a long-term substitute for a high school English teacher. Ideal applicants have graduate degrees in English or Education, prior teaching experience in high school, and a willingness to promote all areas of Jesuit education. Ability to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in a secondary learning environment, working in collaboration with a department leader, Dean of Academics, and the high school principal.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials to develop student learning.
    • English 9 (3 Sections)
    • English 10 (3 Sections)
  • Follow established teaching procedures in line with a Jesuit education
  • Instruct and mentor students
  • Use school-provided technology to help deliver learning materials
  • Follow school disciplinary rules for maintaining the code of conduct within the classroom and school grounds
  • Provide timely and productive feedback to students
  • Maintain school student records and grades in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Participate in department, school, and professional development as required during the assignment

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Competencies/Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) are required
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with McQuaid Jesuit’s Catholic, Jesuit mission is preferred
  • Advanced skills and aptitude with various types of computer software such as MS Office and Google Platforms
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Observes confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • An excellent work ethic with strong attention to detail

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or education
  • (a minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in teaching preferred)
  • Experience teaching English Courses
  • Master’s Degree preferred, prior background and experience in Jesuit education preferred.

Work Environment: Fast-paced school environment working in a school and/or office setting.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: Temporary full-time exempt, 15-week position tentatively scheduled September 2025 through November 2025 (there are school holidays during this time period that would be unpaid time off), Typical hours of 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Salary range: $175 to $200 per diem.
