I. JOB SUMMARY
The Public Programs Supervisor develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves the
Rochester Museum & Science Center’s (RMSC) public programming for general audiences, particularly
families with children ages 5–15. These programs, free with museum admission, are designed to
enhance visitor engagement, drive attendance and must align with RMSC’s mission, values, Strategic
Plan, and educational objectives, while ensuring a welcoming environment and high-quality visitor
experience. Offerings include:
? Featured presenters and tabling opportunities showcasing community members and their
work in science, research, and related ?elds
? Holiday-themed programs for federal and special observances (e.g. Indigenous People’s Day, Pi
Day, Earth Day)
? Cultural celebrations re?ecting Rochester’s diverse heritage and aligning with RMSC exhibits
(e.g. Juneteenth, Pride, Women’s History Month, Black History Month, MLK Jr. Day)
The Supervisor ensures inclusion of diverse perspectives, speakers, and community organizations,
leading all aspects of programming—from concept to ?oor implementation—while training staff and
serving as the primary liaison for presenters. They collaborate cross-departmentally (Guest Services,
Marketing, Advancement, Facilities) to advocate for program needs and make efficient use of RMSC’s
educational resources.They are responsible for documenting and sharing programming ideas and
materials across the institution to build future capacity.
Additional duties include overseeing daily operations of the Museum’s public galleries, ensuring the
functionality and cleanliness of exhibits (e.g. Inventor Center), monitoring visitor safety, greeting school
and community groups, and supporting the Floor Staff team, including Career Ladder participants.
Work schedule is Wednesday to Sunday and will include: ?exible hours, weekday and regular required
weekend hours, occasional evening hours, frequent holiday and extended hours in order to meet the
needs of the organization. Management retains the right to alter work schedules accordingly.
II. DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
? Set and execute strategy for all Public Programs in alignment with RMSC’s mission, core values,
and goals, in collaboration with their supervisor.

? Ensure programs are efficient, cost-effective, and mission-driven, leveraging existing
educational resources and creating new content as needed (e.g., AI activities, Hodinöšyö:nih
programming).
? Plan, develop, and implement public programming year-round, including:
? School break and summer programs (e.g., mini festivals)
? Federal/themed holidays and events (e.g., MLK Jr. Day, Pi Day)
? Exhibit openings, member events, and spontaneous “pop-up” programs
? Manage all aspects of programming: pre-event planning, presenter coordination, day-of
logistics, post-event cleanup, and interdepartmental communication.
? Build and maintain relationships with local experts, organizations, and community members to
enhance programming.
? Clearly communicate expectations, logistics, and payment details with presenters.
? Coach and support Discovery Guides and Education Facilitators as it relates to program delivery,
and workplace skills, including customer service.
? Attend weekly Floor Team meetings to prepare for upcoming programs.
? Provide accurate, accessible background materials to ensure effective visitor engagement.
? Develop and manage program budgets, track expenses, process invoices, and maintain
inventory.
? Submit marketing materials at least 8 weeks in advance of programs, or as de?ned by the
Marketing Department.
? Organize and archive all program materials for easy access and future use.
? Monitor ?oor spaces for safety, cleanliness, and visitor experience; report maintenance needs.
? Coordinate closely with departments (Development, Facilities, Guest Services, Marketing, etc.)
to meet programming and institutional goals.
? Support and document Corporate Member and donor participation in public activities.
? Respond to visitor and staff feedback to continuously improve programming.
? Greet and assist school/community groups, provide way?nding, and ensure program ?ow via
team radio communication.
? Supervise part-time staff and volunteers during programming hours.
? Support other Education programs (e.g., scout workshops, birthday parties), special events, and
general museum operations as needed.
III. JOB DIMENSIONS
The Public Programs Supervisor will work collaboratively with RMSC Education Department colleagues
and other teams across the institution to develop and implement relevant, engaging, educational,
and/or hands-on programs for general visitor audiences, positioning RMSC as a valuable resource for
life-long learning. The dimensions of this position include but are not limited to:
? Setting strategy for their programs; setting and managing budget, meeting annual program
attendance & revenue goals
? Ensuring their programs/events provide inspiring, engaging and educational experiences for
program participants and that they are aligned with RMSC mission and brand
? Ensuring a safe, clean and well managed physical environment that contributes to a positive
experience for program participants and staff
? Providing leadership for, and professional representation of, these Education Department
programs in cross-departmental/organization teams, projects and events and in media requests
? Incorporates RMSC’s principles of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion into all aspects of the position
including program development, delivering and evaluation and in all aspects of hiring, training,
managing and evaluation of staff.
IV. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Public Programs Supervisor has no direct reports but is responsible for indirect supervision of 5-15
limited part-time staff members (Discovery Guides/Career Ladder participants).
Supervisory responsibilities include the following:
? Assisting in schedule creation and rotation assignments
? Training and monitoring staff implementation of program activities
? Providing ongoing support & feedback, providing support in addressing disciplinary matters, and
contributing to annual staff evaluations.
V. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Technology, Equipment, Tools:
? Ability to utilize Microsoft Office products, and company email (Gmail) and all G-Suite (Gmail,
Google Docs, Google Drive, etc.) products
? Capacity to learn Blackbaud’s Altru database
? Ability to use business machines such as personal computer, printer, calculator, copy
machine, facsimile, and phone.
? Ability to learn and utilize virtual programming mediums such as Zoom, Google Meets,
Microsoft Teams, etc.
B. Mental Capabilities
Communication skills –
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively with groups of individuals (internal and/or external).
Ability to write clear, accurate, and effective documents for internal use (such as marketing
templates, staff schedules, and website copy) and visitor-facing use (such as activity signs and
instructions, visitor maps, and take-home materials).
Ability to communicate effectively in writing with people from various backgrounds, including
youth, people with varying disabilities, members of various cultural groups, professionals, and
the general public
Ability to collect and organize data and documents for inclusion in grant reports
Mathematical skills –
Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate ?gures and amounts such as proportions,
percentages, and ratios. Ability to analyze variances.
Ability to balance a budget, track expenses, and account for purchases.
Reasoning ability-
Ability to de?ne problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to
interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or written form and deal
with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to exercise signi?cant judgment and make
decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent.
C. Physical Activity
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be mobile and move
quickly from one end of campus to another; to manipulate, or feel objects, tools or controls;
reach with hands and arms; lower ones-self to lift objects from the ?oor and meet young children
at eye-level.
Ability to set up tables, activity stations, and move items on a cart safely and effectively
throughout the RMSC grounds.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Speci?c vision abilities
required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
D. Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is variable. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in close quarters with staff,
program participants and/or visitors.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS
Educational & Experience Requirement
An equivalent combination of any of the following education and/or experiences:
? Bachelor’s Degree and/or content experience in STEM, education, informal education
programming, event/project management
? 2-5 years educational programming experience and working in a museum environment preferred
? Experience planning/coordinating hands-on activities/events for audiences ages 5-15+
? Ability to solve problems as they arise, to take initiative.
? Ability to effectively collaborate with both in-house teams and external groups.
? Ability to communicate effectively in group and individual situations as well as in written form.
? Proven organizational skills and ability to work independently on multiple, detailed projects
simultaneously.
Preferred Skills/Competencies
? First Aid, CPR & AED Certi?cation preferred; willingness to complete certi?cation
? Some basic budgeting/accounting experience preferred
? Out-going personality and ability to work with a wide variety of individuals
? High levels of organization, attention to detail and effective time and project management skills
