Job Summary

As part of Institutional Research, Data and Analytics (IRDA) job family, this position involves partnering with the university to advance the RIT’s vision by promoting data-informed decision making through analytics, business intelligence, data management, data governance and decision support. High level responsibilities include development and deployment of enterprise wide business intelligence tools and best practices; conducting systematic data analysis (ranging from descriptive to prescriptive); summarizing information about the university into reports including federal and state mandated reports; developing processes and procedures in effectively managing and governing enterprise data; providing information and support for data users to foster the use of information for decision making; and supporting university’s planning, decision support, and reporting activities.

As part of the Institutional Reporting & Analytics sub family, this position’s core function include supporting enterprise level information and analytics systems and practices; developing studies, analytics, internal/external reports and/or dashboards that support institutional goals, planning, and decision making; and synthesizing and communicating information to cross functional campus groups and university leadership.

Job Responsibilities

Data Analyst II will be responsible for duties such as the following at the level defined below:

  • Engineers data solutions that meets the requirements for reports, analytical projects or enterprise level dashboards.
  • Applies analytical techniques and procedures to design and develop complex studies and reports.
  • Designs, develops and deploys enterprise level dashboards based on and related to business design specifications and needs.
  • Oversees or performs completion and/or submission of information for state and federal agencies, consortiums, ranking agencies and other external organizations.
  • Designs and develops survey instruments and serves as a campus resource for best survey administration practices.
  • Acts as consultant to determine data and/or system functional specifications develop or significantly contribute in short to long range strategic plans for overall operations and/or analytic projects
  • Other duties as assigned.
Level II Scope:
  • Has intermediate/practical knowledge of area of specialization principles, theories and concepts and understanding of industry best practices, techniques and standards.
  • Scope and impact of the work typically extends beyond immediate team/area of specialization. Works independently under limited supervision on larger, moderately complex projects and assignments.
  • Problems and issues faced are varied, vague and may require understanding of a broader set of issues. Has trained and proven problem solving skills and techniques requiring little guidance/assistance.
  • Explains complex policies, practices and procedures to others. Requires the ability to communicate with management and leadership.
  • May be responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees within job area. May manage projects at this level, requiring responsibility for the delegation of work and the review of others' work product.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in data, business, or related field or equivalent experience. 2 to 4 years of related data experience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with SAS, R or equivalent software.
  • Hands-on experience building dashboards with Tableau or equivalent BI tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in querying, cleaning and transforming large data sets.
  • General understanding of fundamentals of statistics and quantitative analytics.
  • Detail oriented, with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop effective solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey analytical information in a clear, concise manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience with building and administering surveys using Qualtrics or equivalent survey tool.
  • Familiarity with basics of database management, business intelligence and data warehousing principles.
