Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Public Safety Department, the PSO provides for the general safety and security of the University population, physical property, and assets as prescribed by NY state law, regulatory and departmental procedures, and guidelines.

Demonstrate effective skills, practices and behaviors; observe situations analytically and objectively and report them clearly; react calmly under stress using appropriate judgment; follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; model and promote acceptance and respect for differences amongst all community members; perform effectively in carrying out the Departments stated mission and philosophy.

Provides for an environment that supports the mission of the University of Rochester and ensures safety by prevention of crime, protection of persons and property. Builds good working relationships with the University and community to support the trust and reputation of the Department of Public Safety. Works within established guidelines and policies. Exercises some latitude of independent judgment and initiative. Works in conjunction with Dept. of Public Safety sworn Peace Officers.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor safety conditions, serving as extended "eyes and ears" for the Department of Public Safety through proactive patrol of assigned University areas.
  • Provide basic information, assistance, crime prevention and risk reduction strategies to students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors.
  • Reporting unsafe conditions in parking lots, roadways, buildings
  • Respond as assigned to security calls, such as building access, safety escorts or security equipment issues.
  • Support to patient care (escorts, restraints, stand by)
  • Provide support for campus and/or community events support such as patrolling, access control or crowd management as assigned
  • Monitor and report outages of security equipment such as campus emergency blue phones, cameras, building access systems and campus lighting.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution preferred
  • Experience working in a university or hospital environment preferred.
  • Multi lingual security experience preferred.
  • NYS Security Guard license required
  • Must display exceptional customer service and communication skills required.
  • The ability to read, write, and speak English required.
  • Must be able to conduct sustained foot patrols and/or extended stationary (standing/sitting) post assignments required.
  • Follow oral and written instructions required.
  • Utilize computer hardware and software systems as required by job assignment required.
  • Model and promote acceptance and respect for differences among employees and citizens required.
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License

Pay Range

Pay Rate: $24.06 Hourly

Pay Range: $24.06 - $28.38 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
