The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Licensed Technician Specialist will play a key role in handling the shipping and receiving process at the Bellwood Oncology Pharmacy. This person will need to be detail-oriented to ensure medications are stored properly, all documentation is accurate, and shipments follow regulatory guidelines. The Technician Specialist will report to the Technician Supervisor and work alongside pharmacists to manage couriers, shipment tracking, and communication with regional infusion centers. Performs duties consistent with medication compounding and other advanced level technical tasks as defined by the specialized functional area. Assists pharmacists by compounding, preparing, labelling, and dispensing of medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Completes advanced tasks in specific areas related to training, competency and advancement of patient safety and efficiency related programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides support to the pharmacy team for tasks requiring specific knowledge and training.
  • Develops supporting documentation, policies, standard operating procedures and competency/training assessments, including periodic review and updating as needed.
  • Coordinates initiatives with supervisor(s) of the area, providing leadership and direction for current and future projects with a focus on patient safety, efficiency, and cost-effective strategies.
  • Work with couriers and delivery sites to organize both routine and urgent (STAT) deliveries.
  • Meet weekly with the UR Mail Courier Supervisor to review delivery performance and identify any needed adjustments.
  • Handle medication shipments while following state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Ensure proper temperature storage, monitoring, and safe handling of hazardous drugs.
  • Use Dispense Tracking in eRecord or similar systems to keep track of medication shipments to regional infusion centers.
  • Selects appropriate products or devices for compounding processes.
  • Follows processes that demonstrate compliance with USP standard, including but not limited to, assigning appropriate Beyond Use Date, storage of medications, including hazardous medications, proper garbing procedures and use of Personal Protective Equipment, proper aseptic technique and processes, cleaning and disinfecting, etc.
  • Utilizes specialized compounding technique related to specific medication preparation requirements. Anticipates patient compounding needs based on orders or information provided to the compounding area.
  • Follows required procedures for storage and disposal of controlled substances, pharmaceutical waste, blood/plasma containing products and hazardous materials.
  • Identifies and reports any safety concerns in the compounding processes to pharmacists and/or supervisor as appropriate.
  • Implements plans related to reduction of waste within the compounding area.
  • Understands and follows quarantine and sterility testing procedures as defined in USP standards for compounded medications and extended BUDs.
  • Appropriately uses and maintains technology and equipment utilized in compounding processes, including workflow devices, robotics, and computer software.
  • Identifies problems and provides advanced troubleshooting skills to maintain operation of technology to ensure the highest level of safety in the compounding process.
  • Maintains understanding of eRecord functions, including accessing rate information to provide calculations for required volume production.
  • Utilizes information resources related to compounding processes, including master formulations, compounding records, etc.
  • Assesses and implements new advanced technology options in their area of practice where applicable.
  • Completes and comprehends all assigned educational materials specific to compounding.
  • Contributes to development and maintenance of training and competency assessments in specialized area of practice.
  • Participates in and reinforces environmental monitoring and compliance required by USP standards.
  • Demonstrates appropriate infection prevention processes and techniques. Demonstrates and implements mitigating strategies related to protecting oneself and environment in handling medications, including hazardous medications.
  • Understands and maintains USP and Joint Commission compliance related to compounding oversight and quality standards.
  • Manage the disposal of returned medications according to policy guidelines.
  • Assist with sending returns into the cleanroom in a timely manner for possible reuse of medications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma Required
  • All departmental required education for compounding services Required
  • 1 year of Pharmacy Technician experience Required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience Required
  • At least eighteen years of age at the time of application Required
  • Completion of ASHP accredited training program or equivalent experience as a pharmacy technician Required

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (Currently PTCB) and maintain ongoing education requirements Required
  • Licensed within the state of New York as a Registered Pharmacy Technician Required
