Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position leads the development of an ophthalmic technician training program and manages/guides and trains employees effectively to prepare them for successful employment and completion of ophthalmic certifications. Establishes performance standards and assesses skill level competency for Flaum Eye Institute Ophthalmic technicians. The Clinical Education Program Leader will partner with the Director of Marketing to plan and develop the annual continuing education program for allied health professionals, supporting the institutional goals for educational programs. Responsible for evaluating and assuring clinical education effectiveness including a schedule of regular contact with clinical education affiliates, participation in simulation sessions and didactic instruction.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development and oversight of the internal ophthalmic technician training program to ensure newly hired staff are trained and performing at required skill level. Includes: one-on-one training with technicians e.g. conducting phoropter refractions and/or trial lens refractions, incorporation of faculty feedback on training opportunities, development of a faculty lecture series, provide guidance and oversight of the technician incentive program intended to promote achievement of certification levels (COA, COT, COMT), and collaboration with diagnostic services team on training & skill enhancement opportunities. Presents lectures/learning labs to Technicians.
  • Creates the Strategy and the vision by setting up expectations that align with the Chair’s overall Strategy for the department. He/she leads performance standards and acts in collaboration with other leadership roles within FEI to create a culture of excellent patient care and exceptional team work.
  • Partner with clinic managers and faculty to develop skills competencies for existing staff and ensure staff meet and maintain competency levels.
  • Coaches and guides the assistant technician supervisors in order to develop the next level of management support for the department.
  • Leads all the employee engagement initiatives and ensures demonstration of ICARE values at all levels within the Institution
  • Manages the Assistant Technician Supervisors. Provides continuous performance feedback, initiates performance improvement measures, conducts annual performance reviews, and initiates any appropriate disciplinary actions.
  • Develop an internship/accredited ophthalmic technician training program and curriculum to ensure program meets government regulations, JCAPHO accreditation requirements and certification criteria as they pertain to ophthalmic medical personnel training programs.
    • Instruct students effectively to prepare them for successful employment in the ophthalmic technician profession
    • Conduct practical evaluations and grade practical skills for students
    • Work collegially to develop clinical and educational rotations and experiences necessary for student education
    • Presents lectures/learning labs to students
    • Participates in overall planning and evaluation of program goals and objectives
    • Speaks before groups interested in ophthalmic allied health education
  • Participate in meetings, in-service, professional development, and other institutional activities as required.
  • Works in partnership with FEI Marketing Director to plan and develop the annual continuing education program for allied health professionals and ensure the program meets JCAPHO accreditation requirements for continuing education credits.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Outreach and Business Development on the planning and implementation of the Rochester City School District’s vision screening program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Education, or Business Administration and 3-4 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Communications, Education, Management, a health science or other related field; OR graduation from an accredited, certificate-awarded, Ophthalmic Medical Technologist program. A minimum of five (5) years certified at the Ophthalmic Medical Technologist level (COMT) by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Current Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) certification by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 25.72 - $ 36.01 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
