Position Summary:

The PLC Controls Engineer I for Machine Products Engineering (MPE) is an entry level engineering position. The Software Controls Engineer I is responsible for current product engineering and will rotate across the portfolio to gain exposure and experience. The Software Controls Engineer I is guided by a more senior engineer and assigned projects will start with a small scope.

Job Responsibilities:

Software PLC/CNC:

Software Skills:

  • Basic PLC/ladder software design and development.
  • Basic ability in CNC configuration and programming.
  • Translate customer functional requirements into maintainable code.
  • Design, program, and debug basic PLC/ladder features.

Current Product Engineering:

  • Execute machine orders.
  • Configure machine software to match Sales Orders.
  • Review prior executions and compare contrast to current execution.
  • Review customer specifications and ensure compliance.
  • Software Controls Engineering analysis.
  • Compliance with appropriate safety protocols.

Development Engineering:

  • Assist on clean sheet design for small developments.
  • Engineer to order content (small to medium).
  • Creation of and compliance with coding standards.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, define and implement software solutions that prevent recurrence of the problem.
  • Interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Comprehend and effectively communicate verbally and in writing to specific audiences while using good judgement regarding appropriateness of communications.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to communicate technical information effectively with other functional engineering areas and other downstream departments within Gleason.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment; interact in a positive manner with customers and co-workers.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and deliver results.
  • Willing to cross train and learn.

Engineering Skills:

  • Follow team workflows & processes.
  • Read and understand basic electrical and fluid power schematics.
  • Basic debug of machine issues related to bad components, wiring error, or other hardware mechanical issues.
  • May require frequent guidance.

Typical activities would include:

  • Develop, design, program, test, and debug ladder software for Gleason CNC machine tools.
    • Machine electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic functions.
    • Automation interfaces and interfaces to other software and/or hardware.
  • Provide software controls support to internal & external (onsite as required) customers.
  • Provide quotations and documentation of software controls features and options.
  • Work with other technical disciplines to specify, design, and implement machine features.
  • Adhere to established coding guidelines, test driven development, and documentation procedures.

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field of study.
  • Associate’s degree in related field of study with experience.
  • Entry level position.

Desired Experience or Interests:

  • Controllers: Fanuc, Siemens, and B&R
  • Strong electromechanical aptitude.
  • Software and Electromechanical testing.
  • Proficiency with networking communications e.g., EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet, IO-Link
  • Software Tools: Matlab, Vericut, and Source Control
  • Clubs: Robotics, Racing team
  • Others: Electronics hobbyist, home/auto repair

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional Domestic or International
