Function of Position:

Tenure-track faculty teach classes, develop new educational materials, assist with curriculum review and assessment, perform professional duties, and participate in departmental and institutional functions, including department meetings and committee work. This position reports to the chairperson of the Nursing Department. Academic departments are led by a peer who serves as a department chair for a three-year term. All tenure-track faculty are in the pool from which the chair is appointed. Faculty are responsible for preparing and teaching courses in the department and will be assigned to the Brighton Campus. Tenure-track faculty may be expected to teach at another campus, extension site, or in an online, remote, and/or hybrid modality. The successful candidate will bring expertise in surgical technology to MCC.

Monroe Community College, a member of the League for Innovation in the Community College, offers over 100 programs across two main campuses and several extension sites. The successful candidate will bring a passion for teaching and a desire to support and mentor MCC students as they pursue educational and career goals.

The Surgical Technology Program Director is a member of the faculty in the Department of Nursing and is responsible for all aspects of the Surgical Technology program. The director will develop and teach Surgical Technology courses and will plan for final implementation of the program. Tenure-track faculty develop new educational materials and media and assist with curriculum review and assessment. The director will supervise lab support personnel, adjunct faculty, clinical coordinator, and clinical supervisors.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates and maintains current subject area knowledge
  • Teaches courses and evaluates student performance as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College
  • Teaches multiple courses/sections each term, as outlined by the contract
  • Prepares lesson plans and creates instructional materials and activities for student engagement
  • Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and College guidelines
  • Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records according to department and College guidelines and submits them in a timely manner
  • Maintains office hours according to contractual guidelines in order to support student learning
  • Advises students concerning academic, career and related issues according to contractual guidelines
  • Assists department with student recruitment, enrollment, and placement
  • Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives
  • Assists with the development, review, and revision of department curriculum, including assessment of student learning and program review
  • Develops innovative teaching pedagogies to facilitate learning
  • Incorporates high-impact teaching practices into course design
  • Attends department meetings as a contributing member
  • Contributes to the College through Division, department, and College committees
  • Actively engages in pedagogical and academic discipline professional development
  • Assists the department in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation
  • Assists in the development of grant proposals and implementation of grant projects
  • Works independently and in a team setting, demonstrating excellent time management skills to prioritize workflow and multi-task
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair and may be assigned courses at any MCC campus or extension site location
  • Primary Functions:

  • Directs the Surgical Technology (SGT) Program.
  • Administration, organization, and supervision of the Surgical Technology Program.
  • Continuous quality review and improvement of the program.
  • Responsible for leading curriculum planning, development, and revision for the Surgical Technology Program; including assessment, program review, and accreditation.
  • Teaches Surgical Technology courses in the classroom and clinical settings and evaluates student performance as per guidelines set by the Department and Monroe Community College.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of subject.
  • Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and college guidelines
  • Teaches multiple course sections and prepares multiple courses each term.
  • Prepares lesson plans, creates appropriate teaching aids, and arranges provision of instructional materials and activities for student usage during classes.
  • Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment.
  • Identifies learning outcomes and evaluates student performance accordingly.
  • Establishes and maintains an organized and disciplined classroom environment.
  • Provides students with assistance and guidance.
  • Maintains and submits student attendance records, grades, and other records required by the Department, the College and accrediting agencies in a timely manner.
  • Maintains office hours according to contractual guidelines in order to support students' learning efforts.
  • Advises students concerning professional, academic, career and related issues according to contractual guidelines
  • Assists department with student recruitment, enrollment and placement.
  • Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives including early alert
  • Develops new course materials and innovative teaching pedagogy to facilitate learning.
  • Incorporate high impact practices into course design.
  • Consistently demonstrates effectiveness and growth as a teacher.
  • Attends department meetings as a contributing member.
  • Contributes to the Department through department committees.
  • Contributes to the College through division and college committees.
  • Actively participates in professional development.
  • Assists department in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation.
  • Ensures all clinical requirements of students are met.

  • Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Surgical Technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency
  • NBSTSA certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
  • At least five years of experience in the operating room in the scrub role or five years of current experience as an instructor of surgical technology or a combination of both within the past ten years.
  • Have documented education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design and program planning.
  • Experience conducting and managing surgical technology clinical and laboratory learning.
  • Evidence of proficiency with technology.
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a community college.
  • Commitment to continued professional growth.
  • Evidence of effective communication (interpersonal, speaking, and writing) skills.
  • Experience and/or interest in teaching online courses.
  • Ability to teach courses within the department.

  • Evidence of commitment to associate degree in surgical technology education
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Education or other appropriate field
  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution
  • Recent classroom, conference, and/or clinical teaching experience
  • Curriculum development experience in the Surgical Technology field
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies
  • Experience with program accreditation
  • Proficiency with appropriate medical and communication technology as tools for teaching surgical technology
  • Awareness of the potential value of technology as a tool for teaching
  • Experience and/or interest in developing and teaching online courses
  • Experience with computerized student record management
  • Experience with chairing a professional committee

  • Additional Information:

    Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $45,000 to $58,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.
