DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of building, installing, maintaining and repairing tasks requiring a good knowledge of one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades, such a carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair, welding, sheet metal work, auto mechanics, masonry, heating/air conditioning, sewage facilities maintenance and related trades. General supervision is received from a higher level employee in the form of work assignments, but independent judgment is exercised in choosing methods or procedures. This title differs from Maintenance Mechanic II in the greater responsibility for proper implementation and completion of a large project, requiring the coordination of many activities or trade skills. The Maintenance Mechanic I would be expected to have a higher skill level than a Maintenance Mechanic II. The work is reviewed by checking completed work, by periodic spot checks, or by reports to superiors. General supervision may be exercised over a small number of Maintenance Mechanics II, Maintenance Mechanics III, Laborers or other lower level employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs a wide variety of tasks of ordinary difficulty relating to the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades;Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds a wide variety of electrical fixtures, equipment and systems;Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds a wide variety of plumbing equipment and systems;Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds sewer systems;Performs a wide variety of steamfitting, forging, welding, sheet metal fabricating or machine shop activities;Mixes and lays cement and concrete for walks, steps, floors and foundations, plasters walls,partitions and ceilings, cuts stone, lays bricks and blocks, and performs a wide variety of related masonry and stone cutting activities;Makes, assembles, installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds doors, stairs, walls, floors, desks, chairs, cabinets, tables and other wood products, equipment and structures; Prepares, paints and refinishes wood, metal and other surfaces;Performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs on autos, trucks, tractors and other mechanical equipment;Installs, maintains and/or repairs upholstery, glass, clocks, meters and other miscellaneous items;Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds a wide variety of heating and air conditioning equipment and systems;Installs and repairs carpet, floor and ceiling tile, insulating materials, and roofs;Installs and maintains signs, traffic islands and places road markings;Installs, repairs and maintains pumps, presses, furnaces and other waste water equipment;Assists in the operation of sludge de-watering equipment and chemical feed system;May be required to complete daily reports.

Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades; ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work well with others; demonstrated skill in at least one of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades; good hand and eye coordination; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus three (3) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as a skilled worker in one (1) or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades.NOTE: Additional experience may be substituted for the high school diploma on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Salary: $47,846.38 per year with an increment at 6 months of service.

The starting salary for all new hires is typically at the entry-level figure, as determined by the step placement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Progression through the range occurs over time based on established criteria such as length of service and performance.
